Description
M. Chapoutier farms biodynamically across the Rhone from its base at Tain-l'Hermitage. Neve is a Syrah from the slopes of Ampuis, within the Cote Rotie appellation in the northern Rhone. The terraced hillside sits on granite and schist, soils that drain freely and give the variety its mineral grip and savoury, peppery character rather than the riper, jammier style of warmer climates. The steepness and the strong sun on the roasted slope ripen the fruit, while the cool northern climate holds the acidity and structure. The wine is aged eighteen months in barrel, where slow oxygen exchange firms and softens the tannin and adds a measured spice frame while keeping the terroir clear. The colour is deep, dark purple. The nose shows ripe blackberry and plum with black pepper, olive, violet and a smoky, mineral note. The palate is powerful and savoury, with firm, fine-grained tannin, good freshness and a long, peppery finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanting young vintages an hour ahead. It is a classic partner for grilled and roasted red meats and game.
