Description
Maison Chapoutier, founded in 1808 and an early champion of biodynamics in the Rhône, makes this single-parcel red from Syrah on the Le Méal lieu-dit of the Hermitage hill. Le Méal sits on rolled stones and sandy alluvial deposits over the granite core of the hill, soils that store daytime heat and ripen Syrah fully while the steep south-facing aspect and altitude preserve acidity and aromatic detail. The vines are worked biodynamically and certified organic, with low yields concentrating the fruit. Fermentation is followed by ageing in oak, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds a fine spice and savoury depth without burying the variety. This is a powerful, structured Hermitage built for the cellar. It is deep and dark in the glass, with intense aromas of blackberry and ripe plum lifted by black pepper and clove, and a smoky, leathery undertone typical of granite-grown Syrah. The palate is full and firmly tannic, with liquorice and dark fruit over a long, mineral finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted an hour ahead, in a large glass. It calls for roast beef, venison and herb-crusted lamb.
