Maison Chapoutier makes Belleruche Rosé in the Côtes du Rhône from Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. From a house founded in 1808 and an early adopter of biodynamics, it is a pale, fresh rosé of red fruit and citrus.
Description
Maison Chapoutier was founded in 1808 and is one of the leading names of the Rhône Valley, an early advocate of biodynamic farming in the region. Belleruche is its Côtes du Rhône range, and this rosé blends Grenache with Syrah and a smaller share of Cinsault, grown on the valley's old terraces. The southern Rhône has a warm Mediterranean climate, tempered by the mistral wind that dries the vineyards and keeps the fruit healthy, and the stony soils store daytime heat while draining well. Grenache forms the backbone, giving ripe red fruit and roundness, while Syrah adds colour, a peppery note and structure, and Cinsault lightens the blend. The rosé is made by direct press and short skin contact to keep the colour pale and the style fresh, with cool, controlled fermentation to hold the aromatics. The result is a pale pink wine with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, white peach and citrus peel over a faint floral lift. The palate is dry, light and crisp, with clean red fruit and a peppery, refreshing finish. Serve chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif or with light summer dishes.
