Description
M. Chapoutier, founded in 1808 and a pioneer of biodynamic farming in the Rhone, blends this Cotes du Rhone Blanc from the classic southern varieties, with white Grenache in the lead supported by Viognier, Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc. The vineyards sit on stony marl, clay and limestone, soils that drain well and hold warmth, ripening the fruit fully under the southern Rhone sun and giving the wine its generous stone-fruit character. Each grape plays a role: Grenache Blanc brings body and freshness, Roussanne adds weight and a nutty depth, Viognier lends apricot and floral perfume, while Clairette and Bourboulenc keep the blend lively and aromatic. At 14 per cent this is a ripe, warm-climate white, aged on its lees to build texture and a rounder mouthfeel without oak. The wine is pale gold. The nose shows white peach, apricot and melon with a lift of white flowers, and the palate is medium to full bodied and smooth, with a honeyed richness held in check by fresh acidity through a clean finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a broad white glass. It suits roast chicken, white fish, pork and roasted vegetables.
