Luzón makes this Jumilla red from estate grown Monastrell across its large Murcian holdings. Fermented in stainless steel with skin maceration and given three months in oak, it is ripe and warm at 15 percent, with dark plum, black cherry and a peppery, spiced edge.
Description
Luzón Colección Roble comes from the Luzón winery in D.O. Jumilla, made entirely from Monastrell grown across the estate's extensive vineyards in inland Murcia. Jumilla is hot, dry and high, a continental climate on poor limestone soils where Monastrell ripens fully and reliably, giving deeply coloured, full bodied reds. The cool nights at altitude offset the daytime heat and help retain freshness in the fruit. After harvest, carried out by hand and machine, the grapes undergo alcoholic fermentation followed by maceration with the skins in stainless steel at a controlled 24 to 26 degrees, which extracts colour, tannin and ripe dark fruit while keeping the primary character clean. The wine then spends a short three months in oak, enough to round the edges and add a touch of vanilla and spice without masking the variety. At 15 percent it is warm and generous, deeply coloured, with dark plum and black cherry on the nose over black pepper and liquorice. The palate is ripe and full, the tannins soft, the finish warming. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees with grilled meats, stews or barbecue.
