Luzón makes this young Monastrell in D.O. Jumilla, in Murcia. Made from the region’s signature grape and bottled without heavy oak, it is ripe and warming, with dark plum, black pepper and a liquorice edge at 14.5 percent.
Description
Luzón works in D.O. Jumilla, in the north of Murcia in southeastern Spain, with Monastrell, the region's signature grape. Jumilla is hot and dry, with limestone rich soils and old, often ungrafted bush vines that survived phylloxera in this arid setting. The heat brings deep ripeness, while cool nights and the wide day-to-night swing hold enough acidity to keep the wine balanced at 14.5 percent. This Colección bottling is made in a young, fruit forward style without heavy oak, so the focus stays on the variety's dark fruit and warmth. The wine is deep purple with aromas of dark plum and red berries over black pepper, dried herbs and a liquorice note. The palate is full bodied with ripe, rounded tannin, soft acidity and a warming, faintly cocoa-edged finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees in a large glass. It pairs with grilled red meat, lamb and spiced dishes.
