Description
Luzón is one of the larger names in D.O. Jumilla, in the arid south east of Spain, and this white pairs its estate Macabeo with Sauvignon Blanc. Jumilla sits at altitude on poor limestone and sandy soils, and the wide gap between hot days and cool nights lets the grapes ripen while holding their acidity, which matters for a fresh style like this one. The fruit is picked and moved quickly to the winery to limit oxidation, then destemmed and lightly pressed to draw only the free run and first press juice. The must is settled and clarified before a long fermentation of around twenty days at a controlled 10 to 16 degrees, a cool range that protects the delicate aromatics and the fruit esters that give the wine its lift. There is no oak. The result is pale straw with a green tint. The nose is clean and direct, with green apple, lemon and pear over white flowers. The palate is light and dry, the low alcohol of 11.5 per cent keeping it easy and the citrus acidity carrying a clean, slightly saline finish. Serve well chilled at 8 degrees.
