Lustau age this Moscatel Superior Emilin in Jerez through criaderas and soleras. Made from Moscatel rather than Pedro Ximenez, it is intense yet refined, with sweet-pastry and floral aromas and a zesty orange peel finish.
Description
Moscatel Superior Emilin comes from Bodegas Lustau in Jerez de la Frontera, the house established in 1896 that grew from an almacenista into one of the leading names in the Marco de Jerez. This is a Moscatel rather than a Pedro Ximenez, which gives it a more lifted, citrus-edged character than the darker PX styles. It ages through the criaderas and soleras system, the fractional blending method where younger wine is run into older casks across a stack to build a consistent style year on year. The oxidative time in oak darkens the colour and concentrates the wine, while the Moscatel grape holds onto a floral and orange-peel perfume beneath the depth. The colour is deep amber. The nose is fragrant, redolent of sweet pastries with floral notes and a zesty finish of orange peel and lime. The palate is sweet and intense but kept refined by that citrus lift, running raisin, marmalade and honey into a long, peel-edged finish. Serve cool in a small glass after a meal, with fruit and citrus desserts, caramel puddings or an aged hard cheese.
