Luna Gaia makes this Sicilian red from Nerello Mascalese, the pale, high-acid grape of Mount Etna. Fermented and held in stainless steel under biodynamic farming, it shows sour cherry, red currant and a floral, savoury edge, with bright acidity and light tannin.

Description
Luna Gaia is a biodynamic project linking the Orsogna cooperative in Abruzzo with Sicilian growers, and this Logistilla bottling is built on Nerello Mascalese, the grape that defines red Etna. Nerello Mascalese ripens late and keeps high natural acidity even in a warm climate, giving wines that are pale in colour but firm in structure. The fruit is fermented and held for six months in stainless steel, with no oak, so the focus stays on the grape and the volcanic, mineral character of the island rather than barrel spice. Steel ageing also locks in freshness and the primary red fruit. In the glass it is a bright ruby red. The nose leads with sour cherry and red currant, lifted by rose and dried herbs over a savoury, earthy base. The palate is light to medium bodied, with crisp acidity, fine grippy tannin and a clean, slightly saline finish. At 12.5% it stays bright and digestible. Serve at 15 to 16C in a wide bowled glass. It works well with roast chicken, duck and lighter game, and has the acidity to handle tomato based dishes.
