Luna Beberide makes this young Mencía in D.O. Bierzo, where mild, humid conditions ripen the grape slowly. Unoaked and fresh, it shows bright red cherry and plum with floral lift, pepper and a savoury, juicy finish.
Description
Luna Beberide Mencía is a single-variety red from the Luna Beberide winery in D.O. Bierzo, in Castilla y León. Bierzo sits at the border of Galicia and the Castilian plateau, and its climate reflects that, with mild temperatures, constant humidity and notable rainfall that ripen the Mencía slowly, alongside drier spells that recall the inland regions. Mencía is an aromatic, medium-bodied variety that gives bright red fruit, floral aromatics and a peppery, savoury edge, and here it is made in a young, fresh style. With no oak ageing, the wine keeps its fruit pure and its texture lively, showing the grape and the place without wood character in the way. The cooler, humid growing conditions hold the alcohol moderate at 13.5 percent and keep the acidity bright. The colour is vivid ruby, the nose offers red cherry, plum and red berries over rose, wild thyme and cracked pepper. The palate is medium bodied, juicy and fresh, with fine, supple tannins and a clean, savoury finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly cool, and it works as well with light meats as it does with a charcuterie board.
