From Luis Pérez’s Tintilla trilogy, the Balbaína bottling comes off chalky albariza soils close to the Atlantic near Jerez. A blend led by Tintilla with a touch of Palomino, oak aged, it shows dark plum, redcurrant and a fresh, peppery edge.
Description
Bodegas Luis Pérez makes three single vineyard reds from the native Tintilla de Rota, and this one comes from Balbaína, a vineyard close to the Atlantic in Cádiz. The soils are the white, chalky albariza of the Jerez district, more usually planted to Palomino for Sherry, and a small portion of Palomino joins the Tintilla here. Albariza stores winter rain deep in its chalk and reflects light back into the canopy, sustaining the vines through dry summers, while the proximity to the ocean and the steady sea breeze cool the site and keep the grapes fresh and aromatic. Tintilla brings dark colour and natural structure, and ageing in oak barrels softens the tannins and adds spice and a savoury depth. It is deep ruby, with a nose of black plum, redcurrant, dried herbs and tobacco lifted by a saline, mineral note from the chalk. The palate is medium to full bodied and firm, with dark fruit, liquorice and a fresh, coastal finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees in a large glass, decanting young bottles. It pairs well with grilled and roast red meat.
