Louis Latour makes this Bourgogne Pinot Noir from old plots in the Pierres Dorées, the golden-stone country of southern Burgundy. Stainless steel and barrel ageing give a fresh, savoury red of cherry, redcurrant and earth.
Description
Louis Latour is one of Burgundy's oldest houses, and Les Pierres Dorées comes from the southern reach of the region, the golden limestone country that gives the wine its name. The grape is Pinot Noir, Burgundy's red, farmed sustainably on the limestone soils that suit it. Burgundy's cool continental climate and these calcareous slopes keep the fruit fresh and lend the mineral, earthy character of the variety, with alcohol held to a moderate 13%. The wine is aged for ten months in a mix of stainless steel tanks and barrels, so the fruit stays bright in tank while time in oak rounds the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds light spice. The wine is bright, pale ruby. The nose shows red cherry, redcurrant and wild strawberry with violet, dried herbs and a forest-floor earthiness. The palate is light to medium-bodied and elegant, with fresh acidity, silky tannins and a savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It suits roast chicken, duck and mushroom dishes.
