Description
Louis Jadot, founded in Burgundy in 1859, works exclusively in the region and built its own cooperage in 1995 to make its barrels. Coteaux Bourguignons is a regional appellation that spans the Grande Bourgogne, the Auxerrois and Beaujolais, in effect a marriage of Burgundy and Beaujolais in one wine. This red is led by Gamay with Pinot Noir, the two grapes that define that border. The northern climate is cool and continental, and Gamay grown on the granite and clay-limestone soils of the zone gives a light-bodied, high-acid red with bright fruit and low tannin, the Pinot Noir adding a little perfume and structure. A short time in wood keeps the emphasis on freshness rather than oak. The colour is a light, bright ruby. The nose is fresh and red-fruited, cherry and raspberry with a touch of red currant, plum and a peppery, floral lift. The palate is light and juicy, with soft tannins, lively acidity and an easy, savoury finish. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees, and a light chill does no harm. It is a flexible match for roast chicken, charcuterie and mushroom dishes.
