Description
Louis-Antoine Luyt trained in Burgundy before settling in Chile, and Pipeno Coronel is a País from the Bio Bio valley in the country's cool, rain-fed south. País, the old Mission grape brought by early Spanish settlers, survives here as ungrafted bush vines, many of them very old and dry-farmed, and Luyt works them in the natural style. Pipeno is a traditional Chilean everyday red, and this one is fermented with wild yeasts and bottled without oak ageing, which keeps the fruit fresh, primary and unforced. The southern climate and its cool nights hold acidity and keep alcohol low, here just 12%. The wine is made without additions in the natural manner. The colour is bright, light red. The nose is fresh red and black fruit, raspberry and plum, with a peppery lift and a savoury, earthy undertone. The palate is light, juicy and drinkable, with soft tannin, bright acidity and a clean, refreshing finish. Serve it lightly chilled at around 13 to 14C. It suits charcuterie, roast pork and lighter dishes, and is easy enough to drink on its own.
