Losada makes this Bierzo Godello from old vines over 30 years old on the clay and slate soils around San Lorenzo and San Esteban de Valdueza. Six months on the lees in foudres and concrete eggs give it white peach, pear and a saline edge.
Description
Losada Vinos de Finca farms this single varietal Godello in the D.O. Bierzo, on the clay and slate soils that run between the villages of San Lorenzo and San Esteban de Valdueza. The vines are over 30 years old, a soil combination once undervalued here but now central to the winery's restoration of these plots. Slate holds warmth and drains freely while the clay retains water, which keeps the old vines in balance and concentrates the fruit. Godello is a naturally textured grape, and the wine spends around six months on its fine lees in foudres and concrete eggs. That lees contact releases mannoproteins that add weight across the palate, while the neutral vessels round the wine without lending any oak flavour. It is pale gold in the glass, with white peach, pear and lemon on the nose over a light honeyed note. The palate is fresh and gently creamy, carrying almond and a saline mineral edge from the soils through to a clean, savoury finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits grilled white fish, roast chicken and hard sheep's cheeses.
