Losada is the flagship Mencía of Losada Vinos de Finca in D.O. Bierzo, from vines over 40 years old on clay slopes at 480 to 600 metres. Twelve months in oak give bright cherry and raspberry fruit, floral lift and a savoury, mineral finish.
Description
Losada Vinos de Finca makes this Mencía at Cacabelos in the west of León, within D.O. Bierzo. The fruit comes from old vines over 40 years old planted on clay slopes between 480 and 600 metres, a point the winery stresses because most Bierzo vineyards grow on slate. The clay soils hold more water and lend the wine body and a savoury depth, while the altitude and a cool, Atlantic-influenced climate preserve acidity and the floral aromatics typical of Mencía. The old vines keep yields naturally low and the fruit concentrated. The wine ages 12 months in oak, enough to round the tannins and add a light spice and toast without covering the fruit. It pours a deep cherry red with bright highlights. The nose leads with red cherry and raspberry, a floral, rose-like lift and a peppery, mineral edge. The palate is medium bodied, fresh and supple, with fine tannins, bright acidity and an earthy finish that reflects the clay terroir. This is Mencía in a fragrant, food-friendly register rather than a heavy one. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It pairs well with roast poultry, duck and mushroom dishes.
