Casa Los Frailes blends Monastrell with Garnacha for this Valencia red from the Vals dels Alforins. The estate has farmed Monastrell since 1771; biodynamic and organic, aged six months in barrel and cement, it shows ripe cherry, strawberry and warm Mediterranean herb.
Description
This Monastrell-Garnacha red is made by Casa Los Frailes in the Vals dels Alforins, an upland district of inland Valencia in eastern Spain, where the Vázquez family has farmed since acquiring the estate in 1771. Monastrell has long been the dominant variety here, and it is blended with Garnacha to soften its grip and add red fruit and perfume. The vineyards sit at altitude on limestone soils and are farmed biodynamically and certified organic, dry-farmed so the vines work for their water and concentrate the fruit. The cool nights of the high plateau hold acidity in a warm Mediterranean climate. Ageing runs six months split between oak barrel and cement tanks; the cement keeps the fruit fresh and gives a rounder texture, while the barrel settles the tannins and adds a light frame of spice. The colour is bright cherry with purplish glints. The nose shows red berries, strawberry and cherry, with wild thyme, black pepper and a hint of liquorice. The palate is medium to full, supple and fresh, with ripe tannin and a savoury close. Serve at 16 degrees. It is a good all-rounder with roast and grilled meats.
