Raúl Pérez revives the near forgotten Albarín grape of Castilla y León in this old vine white. Twelve months in used French oak add texture without covering the floral, stone fruit character of a variety that almost disappeared in the 1950s.
Description
Los Arrotos del Pendón Albarín is made by Raúl Pérez, one of Spain's most respected winemakers, from Albarín, a white grape that originated in Asturias and was historically grown in Castilla y León before nearly vanishing in the 1950s. Not to be confused with Albariño, Albarín is naturally aromatic and high in acidity, with a floral, stone fruit character all its own. This organic bottling is aged twelve months in used French oak. Because the barrels are old rather than new, they add texture, a fine lees weight and slow oxygen exchange without lending obvious vanilla or toast, so the grape's aromatics stay in the foreground. The extended time in wood broadens the palate and settles the wine while keeping its freshness intact. The colour is bright, the nose shows white flowers, white peach and apricot over lemon and a note of chamomile, with a light almond edge from the barrel. The palate is textured and fresh, dry and long. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits white fish, roast chicken, shellfish and green salads.
