An unaged overproof from Australia’s Lord Byron at a fierce 63%, a molasses rum that drinks like a clairin, all salty, vegetal cane with grass, olive and a plastic-tinged funk, raw and uncompromising, made for the adventurous and for serious cocktails.
Description
Lord Byron Fire Cane OP is a white overproof from the Byron Bay distillery, distilled on a pot still from molasses and bottled unaged at a blistering 63%. Despite the molasses base it pushes hard into agricole and clairin territory, the funky, vegetal end of white rum rather than anything smooth.
The nose is salty, vegetal and olive-like, and the palate doubles down with grassy, sugarcane-driven funk and a distinctly briny, almost plastic edge, the sort of high-ester wildness that one taster cheerfully compared to licking a battery. This is not a quiet sipper and makes no attempt to be. At full overproof strength it is built for impact, and it truly belongs in cocktails, lending ferocious cane character and funk to a Ti Punch or a Daiquiri. For drinkers who love raw, briny, vegetal whites it is a thrill; the cautious should approach with respect.
