A seven year old single cask of Long Pond finished in a Kentucky bourbon barrel, marque VRW, leaning toward orchard fruit with apple, melon and pineapple over coconut and a vanilla-toasted oak base, bottled by Maison Ferrand at cask strength, 52%, unsweetened.
Description
This Long Pond under the Planteray label is a single cask, marque VRW, drawn from the Trelawny Wedderburn house but shown here in an unusually bright, fruit-forward light. Maison Ferrand matured it in a Kentucky bourbon cask and, unlike much of its mainstream range, bottled this one without added sugar at full strength.
The nose mixes orchard and tropical fruit, apple and overripe notes with coconut and pineapple, and the palate keeps that fresh fruit going, apple and pineapple joined by melon over a toasted oak base. The finish stays fruity with apple, melon, pineapple and vanilla. At cask strength, 52%, it is concentrated yet approachable, the Kentucky barrel lending a sweet, vanilla-toasted frame to Long Pond's fruit. A cleaner, more orchard-driven side of a distillery better known for funk, and an honest unsweetened single cask at that.
