A single cask Long Pond from 2009 bottled by Maison Ferrand under the Plantation label, around eight and a half years old at 42.6%, ripe banana, glue and a wine-like ester over vanilla, apple and a mild, minty close.
Description
This Rum Cartel release comes from Maison Ferrand, the French Plantation house known for mainstream, cocktail-friendly rums and openly used dosage, here a 2009 Long Pond drawn from a single cask, aged around eight and a half years in ex-bourbon and reduced to a soft 42.6%. Long Pond is a historic Trelawny Wedderburn distillery whose pot still rums run funky and fruit forward.
Distilled on pot still from molasses, it noses on banana, glue, ester and a distinct wine-like note, the Long Pond funk clear and appealing. The palate brings vanilla, apple, fruit and that vinous character, the finish vanilla, mild, minty and light. Reduction to 42.6% keeps it very drinkable and a touch gentle, with some wishing for a longer, stronger finish. Bottled from a single cask, it is a süffig, fruit-and-glue Long Pond for drinkers who enjoy the distillery's wine-tinged ester signature in an easygoing, accessible format rather than at full cask strength.
