Loess Verdejo comes from a single terraced plot planted above the Duero in 1998, on sand, pebble, clay and limestone soils. Cold skin maceration and lees stirring lend texture to a fresh, young Rueda white of green apple, pear and citrus.
Description
Loess Verdejo is made by Bodega Miguel y Ruano in D.O. Rueda from a four hectare vineyard planted in terraces above the river Duero in 1998. The site is unirrigated and its soils mix sand, pebbles, clay and limestone, a free draining profile that keeps vigour low and lends the wine a mineral cut. Rueda's continental climate, with hot days and cold nights, preserves the acidity and green, herbal aromatics that define Verdejo. In the cellar the grapes are cold soaked on their skins below 8 degrees, which draws out aromatic precursors and a little texture while the low temperature guards freshness, and after pressing the wine ferments in stainless steel. It then rests on its lees with regular battonage, or lees stirring, which broadens the palate and adds a subtle savoury depth without oak. The wine is pale with green tints. The nose is fruity and youthful, led by green apple and pear with citrus and a floral, herbal edge. The palate is dry and vibrant, its freshness rounded by the lees work through a clean, mineral finish. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees. It makes a good aperitif and a match for fish, shellfish and salads.
