Locos por el Vino makes this powerful Campo de Borja red from Garnacha Tinta in Aragón. At 16 percent and briefly oak-aged, it shows ripe plum, dark berries and a warm, spiced depth from the region’s old vines and hot climate.
Description
Zismero is a Garnacha Tinta from Locos por el Vino in D.O. Campo de Borja, in Aragón, north-eastern Spain. Campo de Borja sits in the shadow of the Moncayo massif and is known for old-vine Garnacha grown on stony, clay-limestone and iron-rich soils. The hot, dry continental climate ripens Garnacha fully, which here pushes the wine to 16 percent alcohol and a ripe, generous style; the altitude and night cooling around the mountain help retain some freshness against that ripeness. Old vines give low yields and concentrated fruit. The wine had a short two months in oak barrels, just enough to settle the tannin and add a touch of spice while leaving the ripe fruit dominant. The colour is deep, dark red. The nose shows ripe plum and dark berries over black pepper, liquorice and a cocoa note. The palate is full bodied and warm, with soft, ripe tannin, moderate acidity and a long, spiced finish carried by the high alcohol. Serve at 17C. Good with grilled red meat, lamb or strong cheese.
