Lo Petitó is a young red from Celler Pascona in the Vall dels Fontanals in Montsant, blending Syrah and Garnacha from clay, granite and slate soils. Made without ageing, it is fresh and fruit forward, with ripe strawberry, blackberry and raspberry.
Description
Lo Petitó de Pascona is the fresh, early drinking red of Celler Pascona, a family run estate in the Vall dels Fontanals in Falset, in the heart of the DO Montsant. Toni Ripoll took over the family business in 2006, working a twenty hectare farm planted to local Garnacha and Carignan alongside Syrah and other varieties. The soils here are a mix of clay, granite and slate, the licorella slate that Montsant shares with neighbouring Priorat lending mineral lift, while the Mediterranean climate ripens the fruit fully. This blend of Syrah and Garnacha is made in a young, unoaked style, with no barrel ageing, so the wine keeps its vivid primary fruit and supple, juicy texture. The absence of oak leaves the focus squarely on the grapes and the slate driven freshness. The colour is a bright, deep cherry red. The nose is generous and fruit forward, with ripe strawberry, blackberry and a hint of raspberry, lifted by pepper and dried herbs. The palate is medium bodied, soft and juicy, with gentle tannin and a fresh, fruit driven finish. Serve lightly cool, around 15 degrees, in a standard glass. It is an approachable everyday red.
