Trossos del Priorat makes Lo Petit de la Casa from organically grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha on the slate soils of Priorat. Twelve months in used French oak give a concentrated red with blackberry, plum and a mineral edge.
Description
Trossos del Priorat works organically certified vineyards in the steep Catalan appellation of Priorat, and Lo Petit de la Casa blends Cabernet Sauvignon at 80 percent with Garnacha. The grapes grow on the region's defining slate soils, known locally as llicorella, which drain freely, force the roots deep and lend Priorat reds their characteristic mineral grip and concentration. After de-stemming, the fruit is cold macerated to draw out aroma and colour before fermentation at low temperature. The wine is aged twelve months in used French oak, a gentler maturation that firms the structure and adds spice without masking the fruit or the soil character. It is deep, dark ruby. The nose is concentrated, with ripe blackberry and plum over black pepper, liquorice and a stony, earthy note. The palate is full bodied and structured, the tannins firm and the minerality carrying a long finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees and decant ahead. It suits grilled red meat, lamb and hard cheese.
