Lo Món 2019

Lo Mon is made by Trossos del Priorat, a winery founded in 2004 in the steep Catalan region of Priorat, aiming for expressive wines of place. It blends four classic Priorat varieties, Garnacha and Cariñena with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, from small organically farmed plots in Gratallops. The defining feature is the soil, the local slate known as llicorella, which fractures into thin layers that force the vine roots deep in search of water. This struggle restricts yields and is the source of the mineral, stony signature that runs through Priorat reds, while the warm Mediterranean climate and steep terraces ripen the Garnacha and Cariñena fully. The wine is aged twelve months in 225 litre French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the firm tannins and adds spice and structure to the concentrated fruit. It is full bodied and structured, with dark plum and berry fruit, liquorice, pepper, a smoky note and a long, stony finish framed by firm tannin. Decant for an hour and serve at around 17 to 18C; it suits roast lamb, beef and game.
