La Vinyeta makes Llavors in D.O. Emporda from old vines around fifty years of age, blending Bordeaux varieties with Garnacha, Syrah and Carinena. Five months in new oak frame a full bodied red of dark plum, cherry and spice.
Description
Llavors comes from La Vinyeta, a winery in Mollet de Peralada in the Alt Emporda, the north east corner of Catalonia where the Tramuntana wind sweeps down off the Pyrenees toward the Mediterranean. The wine is a six grape blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha, Merlot and Carinena, drawn from old vines around fifty years old whose low yields concentrate the fruit. The warm, wind cooled climate ripens the Bordeaux and Rhone varieties fully while the constant breeze keeps the grapes healthy and preserves freshness. After fermentation the wine ages for five months in new French, Hungarian and Romanian oak barrels, a short spell in new wood that adds spice, vanilla and a fine grained tannin without burying the fruit. It is deep and full bodied, with dark plum, black cherry, cracked pepper and a cocoa and oak frame, finishing on ripe but firm tannins. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees and decant for half an hour. It calls for grilled and roasted red meat.
