Description
Listán Mecánico is a minimal intervention red from Eloi Cerdà's Sistema Vinari, made on Lanzarote in the volcanic D.O. Lanzarote. The fruit is mostly Listán Negro with a portion of the white grape Malvasía co fermented, a field approach that lifts the aromatics and lightens the palate. The vines grow in black volcanic ash and lapilli, often in pits dug to reach the soil below, a porous ground that drains fast, stores the day's heat and lends the wine a distinct smoky, mineral character. The Atlantic trade winds keep the climate cool for the latitude, holding acidity and freshness at a low twelve percent alcohol. Fermentation is with native yeast and the wine spends six months in barrel, used oak that adds texture rather than oak flavour. The colour is bright, light ruby. The nose is strawberry and red cherry with smoke, dried herbs and a hint of white peach from the Malvasía. The palate is light, succulent and fresh, with soft tannin and a saline, volcanic finish. Serve cool at 13 to 15 degrees with grilled fish, white meat or vegetables.
