Lirondo is a natural Verdejo from Isaac Cantalapiedra in Rueda, farmed organically and made with minimal intervention. Six months on lees and a slight cloudiness mark the style, with apple, pear and citrus over a savoury, herbal edge.
Description
Lirondo is a natural white from Isaac Cantalapiedra in La Seca, at the heart of Rueda, where Manuel Cantalapiedra and his father farm 21 hectares organically and work with minimal intervention. Rueda's high Castilian plateau, with its stony soils, altitude and wide swing between hot days and cold nights, gives Verdejo both ripeness and firm acidity. This is a low-intervention wine, certified natural, organic and vegan, aged six months on its lees. Extended lees contact adds texture and savoury depth, while the minimal handling and lack of fining leave a slight cloudiness that signals the style. It is unoaked, so the fruit and the grape's herbal character stay in front. The colour is pale lemon and lightly hazy. The nose leads with apple and pear alongside citrus, with a savoury, herbal note from the lees ageing and natural approach. The palate is dry and fresh, with orchard fruit, citrus and a textured, slightly saline finish carrying the grape's characteristic bitter twist. Serve chilled at around 9 to 10 degrees. It suits fresh fish, salads and lighter dishes.
