Liquore Strega is the herb and saffron liqueur of Benevento in Campania, created in 1860 and built on a blend of over seventy herbs and spices drawn from Europe, Central America and the Orient. After the spices are assembled the liqueur is matured in oak barrels, which adds depth and complexity, and it owes its distinctive bright yellow colour above all to the saffron in the recipe. It is bottled at 40%, its name meaning witch, after the old legend that Benevento was a gathering place of witches.

The nose is multi layered with herbs, sweet spices, citrus notes and a gentle menthol freshness, the palate full bodied, spicy and slightly sweet with mint, aniseed, cinnamon, honey and herbs, finishing long, aromatic and slightly dry with a bittersweet herbal close. Behind the bar it works as a sweet, saffron tinged herbal modifier, adding aromatic spice, colour and a gentle bitterness to a drink, which carries a Strega Sour or a Golden Negroni. Serve it neat or over ice as a digestif, and reach for it to refine desserts or flambe in the kitchen.
