Licores Veracruz Mocambo 15 Anos is a Mexican rum carrying a fifteen year marker, distilled from molasses on a column still, aged in ex-bourbon and bottled at 40%. It sits in the affordable end of aged rum and divides opinion, offering a sweet, smoky character that does not always live up to its age statement.

The nose is fragrant with coffee, clove, cardamom and vanilla, while the palate turns sweet with hazelnut and raisin alongside a marked tobacco and burnt oak smokiness. The finish is woody and dry with raisin and firm tannins. For some the ashy, tobacco heavy oak dominates everything, which makes it more of a casual or mixed pour than a refined sipper. Taken as an inexpensive, sweet and smoky rum for relaxed drinking or cola, it has its place, though those expecting a polished fifteen year old may come away wanting.
