A sweetened, dessert-leaning El Salvador rum of orange peel, chocolate, cinnamon and honey with a chili-like warmth, aged fourteen years in ex-bourbon wood and bottled at 45.2%, rich and spicy rather than dry.
Description
Cihuatan's Sahumerio is a fourteen-year rum from El Salvador, distilled in 2006 and matured in ex-bourbon wood, sitting in the softer, sweeter Latin American school. It is a sweetened, dessert-leaning style at 45.2%, where the warmth of the spirit and the sweetening combine for a cosy, after-dinner character rather than a lean, dry profile. The distillery's signature chocolate note runs right through it.
The nose gives orange peel, dried fruit, spice and chocolate; the palate is sweet and spicy with honey and orange peel, finishing on orange, oak and a little alcoholic heat. What sets it apart is the wild, chili-edged spice, layered with cinnamon and the typical Cihuatan cocoa, giving a lot of movement in the glass for an approachable rum. This is a sweet, warming pour for cosy evenings and easy social drinking, ideal for fans of soft, spiced Spanish-style rum, while drinkers chasing bone-dry profiles will want to look elsewhere.
