Description
Libalis is made by Castillo de Maetierra in the Valles de Sadacia, a designated wine area just east of La Rioja that specialises in aromatic whites. It is built mainly on Moscatel de Grano Menudo, the finest member of the Muscat family and the source of its intense floral scent, at around 90 percent, with small parts of Viura and Malvasía filling out the blend. The vines were planted in 1999 on trellises, and the fruit is picked at night to keep the grapes cool and to preserve the delicate floral aromatics that define Muscat. Fermentation is carried out cool in stainless steel to protect those primary aromas, with no oak, so the wine keeps its perfumed, direct character. That aromatic Muscat lift is the heart of the wine. The colour is pale straw with green tints. The nose is openly aromatic, with orange blossom, white peach, citrus and a grapey Muscat note. The palate is fresh and light, with a touch of ripe fruit sweetness balanced by lively acidity, ending clean and floral. This is an aromatic, easy drinking style that also suits a wide table. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a white glass. It works as an aperitif, with lighter and spiced dishes, and with fruit desserts.
