Description
Celler el Masroig makes Les Sorts Jove in D.O. Montsant, in Catalonia, from a blend led by Cariñena and Garnacha with Syrah and Tempranillo. The grapes grow on the estate's predominantly red clay soils, which hold water well and help the vines through the warm, dry summers of this inland zone. Harvest is by hand into small crates so the bunches arrive whole. The fruit is then fermented by carbonic maceration, with the must from crushed grapes at the bottom of the tank starting fermentation in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Whole-berry fermentation of this kind takes place inside the intact grape and is what gives the wine its vivid colour and lifted, juicy aromatics while keeping tannin low. There is no oak. The colour is bright, intense ruby. The nose leads with strawberry and raspberry over darker plum, with a peppery, herbal edge. The palate is light to medium bodied, fresh and supple, with soft tannins and a clean finish. Serve lightly cool, around 14 to 15 degrees. It suits charcuterie, grilled pork and tomato-based dishes.
