A single-cask 4 Year Old Martinique agricole from Saint James, bottled by Les Rhums du Sud and finished in red Pineau des Charentes casks, floral and grassy with a winey lift over a vegetal, woody palate, dry at 46.2%.
Description
This bottling pairs Saint James, Martinique's historic agricole house dating to 1765, with the independent bottler Les Rhums du Sud, who selected this single cask of cane-juice rum and finished it in red Pineau des Charentes barrels. Distilled on a creole column and aged four years, it is bottled at 46.2%.
The Pineau finish, a fortified blend of grape juice and cognac, lends a winey, fruity overlay to the grassy agricole base, the nose offering wine, floral and grassy notes with a clear agricole signature, the palate turning vegetal and woody with that same floral, wine-touched character. Unsweetened, it shows how a fortified-wine cask can reframe a young Martinique agricole without masking its fresh cane heart. A characterful single cask for those who enjoy an aromatic, wine-influenced twist on the style, fine for slow sipping.
