Celler Masroig makes Les Pinyeres in the D.O. Montsant, a blend led by Garnacha and Carignan with a little Cabernet, Merlot and Tempranillo. Grown on red clay and given a carbonic maceration, then twelve months in oak, it is fresh and fruit-led with red berries and pepper.
Description
Les Pinyeres is a red from Celler Masroig in the D.O. Montsant in Catalonia, a blend of Garnacha Tinta and Carignan with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Tempranillo. The vines grow mainly on red clay, which holds water well and gives the wine body and ripe fruit. The harvest is by hand into small boxes to keep the grapes whole, and the fruit then goes into tanks under carbon dioxide for a carbonic maceration, where fermentation begins inside the intact berries. This method emphasises bright, fresh fruit and softens tannin, giving the wine its juicy, lifted character. After maceration it ages twelve months in French and American oak, which rounds the texture and adds a light spice frame. The wine is medium to full bodied, with red berries, plum and cherry, black pepper and a savoury, earthy edge. The palate is balanced and fresh, with supple tannins and a clean finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. A flexible red that suits grilled and roast meats as well as Mediterranean dishes.
