Description
Les Crestes is made by Mas Doix in the D.O.Q. Priorat, one of only two appellations in Spain to hold the top DOQ classification. It is a blend led by Garnacha with Carinena and Syrah, from vineyards averaging around 20 years old planted on sloping sites at about 400 metres. The defining feature here is the soil, the local slate known as llicorella, which reflects heat, forces the roots deep in search of water and gives Priorat reds their hallmark mineral, stony character and concentration. The grapes are hand harvested into small ten kilogram crates to keep the fruit intact and prevent premature fermentation. After vinification the wine is aged for ten months in French oak, a restrained regime that softens the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds a light frame of spice without masking the fruit or the terroir. In the glass it is an intense cherry red, with ripe cherry, strawberry and plum on the nose lifted by black pepper, liquorice and a clear stony, mineral note. The palate is full bodied and structured, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a long, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted, with grilled and roast meats.
