Ca N’Estruc makes L’Equilibrista in D.O. Catalunya from Garnacha, Syrah and Cariñena grown at altitude below Montserrat. Part is fermented in open French barrels, part in steel. At 12.5% it is fresh and savoury, with red currant, cherry, tobacco and pepper.
Description
L'Equilibrista is a red from D.O. Catalunya, made by Ca N'Estruc from Garnacha, Syrah and Cariñena. The vines, between eighteen and forty years old, grow at around 165 metres below the Montserrat massif, whose mountains shelter the vineyards from cold northerly winds and give a gentle, milder climate through the year. That moderate setting holds the alcohol to 12.5% and keeps the wine fresh and savoury rather than heavy. In the cellar, one part of the must is fermented in open French oak barrels and another in stainless steel, both at controlled temperature with regular pump-overs to draw colour and structure gently from the skins. The two fractions are then aged in wood. The colour is a vibrant garnet with ruby highlights. The nose shows red currant, cherry and plum, with tobacco, black pepper and a fresh, earthy lift. The palate is medium bodied and bright, with fine tannin, savoury red fruit and a long, peppery finish. Serve at 16 degrees in a standard glass. It is a versatile food wine for roast and grilled meats.
