Leo and Roc Gramona make Els Escorpins in Catalonia from old Garnacha vines, named for the scorpions in the vineyard. Biodynamic and aged twelve months in oak, it is a powerful, expressive red with ripe red fruit, pepper and a savoury, earthy depth.
Description
L'Enclòs de Peralba is a Catalan project from Leo and Roc Gramona, who named this wine Els Escorpins after the scorpions found among the old vines. It is a single-variety Garnacha Tinta from an old farmstead vineyard, farmed biodynamically and organically. Garnacha thrives on poor, well-drained soils and warm sites, ripening to full sugar and giving generous, fruit-driven reds; old vines crop little and concentrate flavour, the source of this wine's depth and expression. Ageing for twelve months in oak rounds the tannins through measured oxygen exchange and adds gentle spice, while biodynamic farming and minimal handling keep the focus on ripe fruit and a savoury, mineral signature of the site. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows ripe red berries and plum over black pepper, dried herbs and an earthy, stony note. The palate is full bodied and warm, the fruit generous, the tannins supple and the finish long and marked by liquorice and pepper. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decanting briefly to open the fruit. It suits roast lamb, grilled meats and earthy mushroom dishes.
