An old-school Jamaican overproof at a fierce 73%, nutty toffee, milk chocolate and tropical fruit over burnt sugar and cedar, built to bring heat and funk to cocktails rather than to be sipped neat.
Description
Lemon Hart & Son is a historic name in British rum, and this vintage Golden Rum is a high-strength Jamaica overproof in the traditional mould, all molasses base and raw power. With no age statement and a towering 73% strength, it sits firmly in cask-strength territory and is built for mixing, an old-style booster rather than a contemplative dram.
The nose shows nutty nougat, tropical fruit and chocolate, the palate milk chocolate, tropical fruit, ester and caramel, the finish carrying burnt sugar, a syrupy sweetness and cedar. There is plenty of toffee-oak sweetness and fiery spice, the alcohol inevitably forward at this strength. Its job is to bring heat, chocolate-toffee richness and a touch of Jamaican funk to cocktails and tiki drinks, where the proof and ester punch through, rather than to be poured neat. A powerful, characterful relic for experienced palates who reach for overproofs.
