Description
Forjas del Salnés is a small family winery in Salnés, Pontevedra, in the heart of DO Rías Baixas, with the Bierzo oenologist Raúl Pérez among its collaborators. Leirana is a single variety Albariño from four hectares of old vines aged between 40 and 70 years, planted on sandy granite soils. The old vines yield concentrated, balanced fruit, and the sandy granite lends a fine, mineral edge, while the cool, wet Atlantic climate close to the coast gives Albariño its bright acidity and saline signature. The wine is made in a traditional, restrained way in stainless steel, which keeps the aromatics clean and precise and lets the age of the vines and the character of the soil come through rather than any cellar effect. The colour is pale lemon with greenish tints. The nose unfolds citrus of lemon and grapefruit with subtle green apple. The palate is balanced and finely drawn, with white peach, citrus and a clear saline note carried by firm acidity to a long, mineral finish. Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It is made for shellfish and simple white fish.
