Legaris makes this Rueda white mainly from Verdejo with a little Sauvignon Blanc, off high vineyards at 700 to 800 metres on stony soils. Crisp and herbal, it shows lemon, green apple and the grassy bite typical of the grape.
Description
Legaris Verdejo comes from the D.O. Rueda in Castilla y Leon, drawn from estate vineyards in Curiel de Duero and San Martin de Rubiales. It is mostly Verdejo with a small part of Sauvignon Blanc. The vines grow at 700 to 800 metres on brown, stony soils with good drainage and aeration, altitude that brings cold nights and a wide swing between day and night temperatures, which slows ripening and locks in the fresh acidity and aromatic lift that define Rueda. The fruit is picked and pressed cool, then fermented at low temperature in stainless steel with no oak, a method that protects the primary fruit and the varietal character. Verdejo gives lemon and green apple with pear, a dried herb and fennel edge and a touch of white flowers, while the Sauvignon adds a grassy note. The palate is crisp and dry with a faint bitterness on the finish that is typical of the grape and keeps it fresh. Serve cold at 8 to 10 degrees. It is a natural match for shellfish, white fish and green salads.
