Description
A Ledaig single malt, released by That Boutique-y Whisky Company, a 19 year old and bottled at 59.1%. A release of 475 bottles. Ledaig is the peated malt made at Tobermory on Mull, a distillery founded as Ledaig in 1798. The stills carry boil bulbs and an S shaped kink in the lyne arms, which raises reflux.
Distilled from malt peated to around thirty seven parts per million, building the bold, smoky Ledaig style. A refill bourbon cask held it, keeping the smoke to the fore. Past twenty years the peat is a soft whisper over a deep, fruity malt. The cool, damp island air gives a slow, even maturation. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working. Tobermory has distilled in the island's harbour town since 1798. The town of Tobermory was laid out by the British Fisheries Society a decade before the distillery came.
Bottled at a cask strength 59.1%, it is intense. Wood smoke, BBQ char and a coastal salt, and honeyed vanilla comes through from the ex-Bourbon. It is bold and coastal, the peat and soot to the fore. The close is long, smoke over a sweet fruit. This is a heavily peated malt from Mull's only distillery.
