Description
Signatory Vintage bottled this Ledaig, an 8 year old island malt from 2011, drawn from cask 19 (part) and bottled at 60%. The outturn was 151 bottles. Ledaig is the peated malt made at Tobermory on Mull, a distillery founded as Ledaig in 1798. It is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries, and the only one on its island.
It was worked through high reflux stills from peated malt, for the smoky, maritime spirit Ledaig is known for. A sherry cask wrapped the smoke in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Still young, it is smoky and briny with a sweet lift. Coastal warehousing lends a mineral, sea spray lift to the smoke. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working. Tobermory has distilled in the island's harbour town since 1798.
At its natural 60% it is concentrated. A maritime smoke over ripe fruit, and the Sauternes lends honey and apricot. Soft smoke and brine sit behind the cask sweetness. The finish runs smoky, sweet and warm. This is a bold, peated island single malt.
