Description
Bottled by Lady of the Glen, this Ledaig, a 10 year old island malt from 2011, drawn from cask 7006 and bottled at 56.5%. Just 339 bottles were filled. Ledaig is the peated malt made at Tobermory on Mull, a distillery founded as Ledaig in 1798. It is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries, and the only one on its island.
It was distilled from peated malt in kinked copper stills on soft Mull water, giving a sooty, coastal peat smoke over a fruity sweetness. A wine cask held it, layering red fruit over the soot. At a youthful age the smoke is vigorous and coastal. Refill oak lets the peat and brine of Ledaig lead. In dry summers the distillery has paused when its hill loch ran low. The distillery sits at the head of the bay, beneath a steep wooded hill. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019.
Undiluted at 56.5%, it is powerful. Peat smoke, brine and a medicinal note, and the Port cask adds plum and red berry. A BBQ char and a sea salt lift it. A long, ashy finish ends on sea salt. This is Ledaig, the peated malt of the Isle of Mull.
