Description

This Ledaig was drawn and bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd, aged 13 year old from 2009, drawn from cask 700326 and bottled at 56.3%. Only 97 bottles were released. Ledaig is the heavily peated single malt of Tobermory distillery, the only distillery on the Isle of Mull, founded in 1798. Water comes from the Gearr Abhainn, a private hill loch above the town of Tobermory.

The spirit was distilled from peated malt in kinked copper stills on soft Mull water, giving a sooty, coastal peat smoke over a fruity sweetness. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, vanilla beneath the soot. By this age the peat rounds into a sweeter, coastal smoke. Refill oak lets the peat and brine of Ledaig lead. A rare, more heavily peated make has appeared under the name Iona, after a neighbouring isle. In dry summers the distillery has paused when its hill loch ran low. The distillery sits at the head of the bay, beneath a steep wooded hill.

At its natural 56.3% it is concentrated. Peat smoke, brine and a medicinal note, and the refill bourbon lends a quiet vanilla. A BBQ char and a sea salt lift it. A long, peaty finish smoulders to the end. This is Ledaig, the peated malt of the Isle of Mull.
