Description
Single malt Ledaig, an independent Cadenhead's bottling, aged 11 year old from 2008 and bottled at 55.2%. Just 270 bottles were filled. Ledaig is the peated malt made at Tobermory on Mull, a distillery founded as Ledaig in 1798. The distillery makes two malts: the unpeated Tobermory and the peated Ledaig.
It was distilled from peated malt in kinked copper stills on soft Mull water, giving a sooty, coastal peat smoke over a fruity sweetness. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, a light sweetness under the peat. Still young, it is smoky and briny with a sweet lift. A patient maturation suits the bold, smoky Ledaig character. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working.
At its natural 55.2% it is concentrated. Peat smoke, brine and a medicinal note, and vanilla and a soft oak come from the bourbon wood. A BBQ char and a sea salt lift it. The finish is deep, tarry and sweet. This is Ledaig, the peated malt of the Isle of Mull.
