Description
Single malt Ledaig, selected and bottled by Hidden Spirits, aged 12 year old from 2007, drawn from cask LG0720 and bottled at 52.8%. Ledaig is the heavily peated single malt of Tobermory distillery, the only distillery on the Isle of Mull, founded in 1798. Water comes from the Gearr Abhainn, a private hill loch above the town of Tobermory.
The spirit was distilled from peated malt in kinked copper stills on soft Mull water, giving a sooty, coastal peat smoke over a fruity sweetness. It was matured in ex-Bourbon oak, a vanilla sweetness beneath the smoke. Past a decade the smoke softens, the soot and brine settling over ripe fruit. A patient maturation suits the bold, smoky Ledaig character. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working.
At its natural 52.8% it is concentrated. Peat smoke, brine and a medicinal note, and the refill bourbon lends a quiet vanilla. A BBQ char and a sea salt lift it. The finish is deep, tarry and sweet. This is Ledaig, the peated malt of the Isle of Mull.
