Description
Bottled by Elixir Distillers, this Ledaig, aged 14 year old from 2005, drawn from cask 900177 and bottled at 57.8%. 637 bottles in all. Ledaig is the heavily peated single malt of Tobermory distillery, the only distillery on the Isle of Mull, founded in 1798. Its history is famously broken, with long silences; the buildings once held holiday lets and stored cheese.
Distilled from peated malt in kinked copper stills on soft Mull water, giving a sooty, coastal peat smoke over a fruity sweetness. A sherry butt held it, sherry and smoke twining together. Around the mid teens the smoke knits with dried fruit and a sea salt. Refill oak lets the peat and brine of Ledaig lead. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working. Tobermory has distilled in the island's harbour town since 1798.
At a natural 57.8% it is bold and full. Peat smoke, brine and a medicinal note, and the Oloroso brings dried fruit, fig and a nutty depth. A BBQ char and a sea salt lift it. A long, ashy finish ends on sea salt. This is Ledaig, the peated malt of the Isle of Mull.
