Description
Elixir Distillers selected this Ledaig, a 13 year old from 2005, drawn from cask 900168 and bottled at 57.3%. A release of 622 bottles. Made on the Isle of Mull, Ledaig is the heavily peated malt of the island's only distillery. It is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries, and the only one on its island.
It was worked through high reflux stills from peated malt, for the smoky, maritime spirit Ledaig is known for. Maturation in sherry laid dried fruit over the peat. By this age the peat rounds into a sweeter, coastal smoke. Years in oak round the smoke while the medicinal, tarry notes mellow. In dry summers the distillery has paused when its hill loch ran low. The distillery sits at the head of the bay, beneath a steep wooded hill. Both malts feed the Scottish Leader and Black Bottle blends as well as single malt. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019.
At a full 57.3% it is intense and layered. A maritime smoke over ripe fruit, and the Oloroso gives dried fruit and a toasted nuttiness. Soft smoke and brine sit behind the cask sweetness. It closes long, smoky and briny. This is a bold, peated island single malt.
